For a personnal project, I wanted to translate Jazz from Fall of Cybertron (High Moon, 2012) into a character for animation, with a hand-painted style, based on the concept by Billy King: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/ArDlq
The main challenge was designing a shader in Arnold, that would have a hand-painted feel, while still having a metalness effect. The functional aspect of the character was also fun to analyse, and plan the modelling and rigging to avoid unwanted collisions and bends while giving Jazz full range of motion.
Modeling was done in Maya and Zbrush, Texturing in Substance Painter, Rigging and Animation in Maya, Rendering with Arnold, and CG Rebuild/Comp in Nuke.
Idle animation; full shader, wireframe, rig
Lookdev; both layers are mixed using a fresnel effect
